Mike’s story follows his travels and interactions with friends and strangers, from New York, across to Philadelphia and then down to Colombia and Argentina.  Mike and Sylvia experienced many acts of kindness as well as great travel moments, as they travelled down the spine of the Americas.  Their hope is that people, particularly with disabilities, will feel confident to step out of their comfort zone and explore a little more of what this wonderful world has to offer.

Travelling by Road, Rail, Sea, Air (And Wheelchair) in North America

This story is an adventure experienced by Mike and his disabled wife, Sylvia. Sylvia, who has Parkinson’s disease, made the journey with the aid of a wheelchair across North America for four weeks in September and October 2016.

Vamos a Brasil!: Recollections of a Volunteer Attempting to Teach English in Brazil

This is the story of a visit to Brazil by Mike and his wife, Sylvia, in January 2008. Sylvia is a trained and experienced teacher; Mike is not, but he knows a smattering of Portuguese. They were invited to teach English in a mission school in the industrial city of Belo Horizonte, and the story covers their exploits and attempts to teach a lovable but very lively class of students from all over Brazil.

The Italian Therapy Job: A Travel Diary

Mike’s book , The Italian Therapy Job, fits in somewhere between the genres of a travel book and increasing the awareness of Parkinson’s disease, which is a condition his wife Sylvia has had for around ten years. As the title indicates, the book is largely set in Italy, and charts the experience that Sylvia and Mike had in 2017 at the European Parkinson’s Therapy Centre

THE WHEELCHAIR GOES EAST

Mike Fox is a semi-retired British civil servant with a passion for travelling, reading, anything that moves on railway lines, and badminton (which he continues to play badly). He is married to Sylvia, who has a passion for dogs and music. They have two adult sons, Nathan and David, who fled the nest many years ago, and Katy, a loveable but naughty border collie who thinks she’s in charge (and probably is). Mike’s travel genre also has an emphasis on travelling for the disabled, largely because his wife, Sylvia, who usually travels with him, has Parkinson’s disease and gets around mostly with the aid of a wheelchair.

Brooklyn to Buenos Aires: Travelling Down the Spine of the Americas

In addition to reflecting my passion for travelling, a couple of themes emerged during the journey and writing of the book. Firstly, travel is quite a challenge for my wife, Sylvia, who has Parkinson’s disease and who, as a disabled person, needs a wheelchair for getting around most of the time. This adds a whole new dimension to the practicability of travel, which my book addresses.

The Pivo Trip of Slovakia: Memoirs of an Anglo-slovak Student Exchange

The year is 1995, a few years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. This has led to a whole new way of life in former Soviet satellite countries like Slovakia.

Mike Fox was privileged to accompany a group of students, who went out from the UK into the country, to experience a changing culture, as Slovakia enthusiastically emerged into the ways of the western world.

MIKE FOX

Mike has recently retired from the British Civil Service.  He has a passion for travelling, reading, anything that moves on railway lines and badminton and table tennis (which he continues to play badly).  In football, he supports the red half of Manchester.  He is married to Sylvia, who also loves travelling and has a passion for most species of dogs and most genres of music.
